Traction is sometimes used in the treatment of low back pain. It is especially beneficial for disc related conditions such as degenerative disc disease.

Some the reasons for traction include:

  • Disc bulge
  • Nerve pressure
  • Joint arthritis

Traction for back pain helps to seperate the joints and disc in the spine relieving pressure. When the pressure is relieved the disc bulge can go back into the disc space, the joints are relieved of pressrue and any pressure on the nerve root is relieved.

Mild traction or intermeittant traction has been used with success for the treatment of low back pain in my office.

If you live in downtown Tampa fl or 33602 zip code and are suffering from low back pain, call for an evaluation to see if traction can help your conditions.

How to Check your Child for Scoliosis

Scoliosis

X-Ray of Scoliosis

Scoliosis is when a person’s spine is curved

On an x-ray, viewed from the rear, the spine of an individual with a typical scoliosis may look more like an “S” or a “C” than a straight line.

It is typically caused by vertebral anomalies present at birth, or having developed as a secondary symptom of another condition, such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy or physical trauma.

Scoliosis affects approximately 7 million people in the United States

The signs of scoliosis can include:

  • Head Tilt
  • Uneven shoulders
  • Uneven musculature on one side of the spine
  • A rib prominence and/or a prominent shoulder blade, caused by rotation of the ribcage in thoracic scoliosis
  • Uneven hips / leg lengths
  • Asymmetric size or location of breast in females
  • Slow nerve action (in some cases)

In the case of the most common form of scoliosis, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, there is no clear cause and it is generally believed to be multifactorial. Genetic factors in the development of this condition is widely accepted.

Scoliosis is more often diagnosed in females

In some cases, scoliosis exists at birth due to a congenital vertebral anomaly. Occasionally, development of scoliosis during adolescence is due to an underlying anomaly such as a tethered spinal cord, but most often the cause is unknown, having been inherited through multiple factors.

Scoliosis often presents itself, or worsens, during the adolescence growth spurt.
